Varsity out guns Garnet Valley 71-58 to capture CL regular season title

Conestoga jumped out to a quick start in Friday’s regular season finale against a Garnet Valley squad fighting for a playoff spot. Stoga raced to a 25-9 first quarter lead behind the continued sharp shooting of senior co-captains’ Charlie Martin and Scott Shapiro and Angus Mayock with 10, 7, and 6 pts apiece. Charlie swished a no-look 3 as time expired in the quarter much to the delight of the Stoga fans.
Sophomore Milton Robinson kept the pressure on in the second quarter with 7 pts and some nice defense. Sophomore Zach Lezanic added 5 pts and kept the offense running smoothly as another 3 pointer at the buzzer had Stoga holding a 44-22 lead.
The third quarter saw Stoga shooting finally cool off as GV’s top scorers were heating up going on a 12 to 2 run to narrow the lead. Some late baskets from Scott left Stoga with a 57-39 lead after 3.
Garnet Valley had one last rally in them and whittled the lead down to 9 in the fourth quarter. But a timely basket and rebounds from Charlie Shappell and enough free throws helped Stoga close out the regular season with a solid 71-58 win. Leading a balanced score sheet were (Charlie M. 19 pts., Scott S. 17 pts., and Milton R. 15 pts.) Next up a Central League semi-final matchup against Strath Haven at Harriton H.S. on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
