Varsity gets important District win over Pennwood in final home game

Conestoga Boys Varsity team returned home one last time in an important District 1 playoff game with the winner to play for the 5th or 6th seed from District 1 in the State Championships.  And once again the boys put on a show, electrifying the crowd and coming away with a 62-51 win over a very athletic Pennwood High School team.

The first half was very close with both teams defending well.  The lead exchanged hands throughout the half as Conestoga led 17-16 after the first, but Pennwood took a 26-28 lead into intermission.  However, Stoga exploded in the third quarter outscoring their opponent 24-9 as Senior co-captain Angus Mayock (18 pts, 10 rebounds) and Sophmore Milton Robinson (10 pts, 2 reb, 1 ast) dominated the lane and scored at will.   Senior co-captain Charlie Martin (15 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast) and Sophmore Zach Lezanic (10 pts, 2 reb, 5 ast) kept the defense honest each hitting a “three” in the period.  In the fourth quarter, Pennwood was forced to foul and take their chances on the Pioneers missing free-throws.  However, Stoga rejected that plan hitting all but one free throw in the quarter and secured the victory.  Senior co-captain Scott Shapiro added 9 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the victorious Pioneers.
