February 7 vs. Haverford:
Conestoga Freshman Boys (11-4) could not avenge an earlier loss this season to Haverford High and lost a physical, hard fought battle by a score of 28-34. Both the Pioneers and Fords were playing aggressively from the start and both teams found it difficult to score. It was 8-8 after one quarter and 12-14 at the half. In the second half, the trend continued of scrappy defense, diving for loose balls and hard fouls. Down 18-24 at the start of the 4th, Dom Barzak’s 7 points, and a three-pointer from Quinn Borger was not enough to secure the win. Barzak finished with 9 points. Riley Deshelter contributed 6 points and 3 rebounds, and Scotty Smith contributed 4 rebounds and all-out hustle in his minutes played.
February 3 vs. Upper Darby:
Conestoga Freshman Boys (11-3) won a thriller at Upper Darby High School by a score of 32-31. The win avenges a loss to the Royals earlier this season. Leading scorer Riley Deshelter (10 points) scored the final points of the game scoring a layup and got fouled and made the free throw under pressure from a loud Upper Darby crowd. Stoga led 11-10 after the first and 21-15 at the half. Spencer MIlanek pulled down 5 rebounds, scored and had an assist in the second period. The score was tied 26-26 after three setting up the exciting final. Nailmeer Robinson contributed 7 points, 4 rebounds in the win.
January 31 vs. Springfield:
Conestoga Freshman Boys reeled off their sixth consecutive victory Tuesday afternoon away at Springfield High 39-30. The Pioneers (10-3) were led by Dom Barzak who scored a game high 20 points. Stoga controlled the tempo of the game from the onset but couldn’t shake the Cougars as the score was tied 8-8 after the first quarter, Stoga led 15-11 after two and 24-20 after three quarters. But then Barzak scored 13 of Conestoga’s 15 fourth quarter points to finish the game. Noah Lennoutte led the team with four rebounds.
January 24 vs. Ridley:
The Conestoga Freshman Boys basketball team was victorious Tuesday afternoon at Ridley High by a score of 32-24. This Stoga team is now 8-3 on the season. This game was a low scoring affair as the Pioneers led by scores of 11-7, 15-9 and 17-13 through the first three periods. Then in the 4th quarter the game really heated up as both teams played aggressively and physically. Ridley lost its edge and the Green Raider players and coaches were assessed technicals. Stoga kept their composure throughout the period and converted enough free throws to distance themselves and win the hard fought battle.
January 20 vs. Penncrest:
Conestoga Boys Freshman basketball team defeated Penncrest High School by the score of 38-26 Friday afternoon at Conestoga High. It was a complete and balanced team effort as all 14 Stoga teammates contributed by scoring or rebounding. Stoga led early and never looked back. The Pioneers were led by unstoppable Xavier Picone with 16 points. Jack Troy led the team in the rebound category with 3 boards and Scotty Smith led in assists with 3 dishes.
January 18 vs. Garnet Valley:
Conestoga boys freshman team showed off their defensive and rebounding skills with a 27-15 victory over the Garnet Valley Jaguars. The Pioneers grabbed a season high 31 rebounds and held their opponent to a season low 15 points. After a slow 1st quarter and a 6-3 lead, Stoga was led by Naimeer Robinson who scored 5 points and was strong under the basket. The 3rd quarter was the high-point for the Pioneers as they shut out the Jags 8-0 in the period. Jack DiMarino (9 pts, 3 reb) was hot off the bench scoring 7 pts in the period including a 3-point dagger in the hearts of GV. Leading rebounder Xavier Picone secured 7 rebounds, and Scotty Smith and Riley Deshelter added 4 rebounds each. Andrew Guillecheau, Spencer Milanek and Jack Troy each contributed 3 rebounds off the bench.
January 13 vs. Strath Haven:
Conestoga Freshman Boys came out on top of a tight basketball game Friday afternoon vs Strath Haven High School with a score 34-28. After trailing 9-13 after the first period, Dom Barzak (13 pts, 4 reb, 2 ast), Xavier Picone (11 pts, 3 reb) and Spencer Milanek (4 pts) combined for 13 points and Drew Ridder (3 reb, 2 ast) and Quinn Borger rounded out a line that held SH to 4 points in the period as Stoga led 22-17 at the half. A very good defensive effort from both teams had the score at 26-25 going into the final period. Barzak led the team in the 4th period with 7 of the teams 8 points and secured the win.
January 6 vs. Marple Newtown:
Conestoga Freshman Boys overcame a slow start and were victorious at Marple Newtown High Friday afternoon by a score of 41-26. The Pioneers trailed after one period and were tied 16-16 at half. But a high pressure defense, dominating rebounds, and a balance scoring attack led by center Xavier Picone (8 pts, 6 reb), Scott Smith (10 points, 3 reb) and Dom Barzak (8 pts, 2 ast) allowed Stoga to hold the Tigers to only 10 second-half points and pull away for the win.
January 3 vs. Upper Darby:
December 22 vs. Harriton:
Conestoga Freshman Basketball (3-1) team resumed their winning ways with a convincing 43-23 win over Harriton High Thursday afternoon at home. All 15 players contributed to a balanced scoring attack and an impressive 23 rebounds and 11 assists. A 4 point first quarter lead grew to 13 by half and the Pioneers never looked back. Impressive was Chris McGovern (4 points, 4 rebounds) on the glass and Quinn Borger (5 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) at point guard. Also noted was Riley Deshelter’s 7 points in the first quarter to set the tone for the game. The boys now have the Christmas break before resuming Tuesday, January 3rd at home vs Upper Darby. Stoga!
