On Jan. 26, the Conestoga varsity boys basketball team ended Senior Night with a bang. Our Conestoga Pioneers won against the Haverford Fords 53-44, and at the final buzzer, co-captain Charlie Schappell snagged the ball, raced across the court, and dunked. Here’s how it went down.

The Breakdown:

Senior co-captains Colin McFillin and Michael Erickson got the ball rolling and set the pace of the game in the first quarter. After an initial field goal, McFillin stole the ball twice, drove down the court and scored two points each. With two field goals from Erickson and one three-pointer from junior Shane Scott, the Pioneers ended the first quarter firmly in the lead at 13-8.
Near the end of the second quarter, they lost their lead, ending the first half 26-28. That gap widened to 33-37 by the end of the third quarter.
But in the fourth quarter, the finishing lineup reclaimed their momentum. With rebounds, blocks and steals, senior co-captain Charlie Schappell gave the Fords little time to score. In the meantime, every Pioneer on the court scored, junior Zach Lezanic making an incredible seven out of eight free throws.
In the final few minutes, no ‘Stoga student was worried. The Pioneers were firmly in the lead at 51-44. It was just sweet, sweet icing on the cake when in the final few seconds, Schappell stole the ball, raced across the court and at the final buzzer, slam-dunked. The game ended, the crowd went wild and the Pioneers beat the Fords 53-44.
