Stoga Tips Off ’23-’24 Season at Marple Newtown HS

45-43 Win Over Penn Wood

Westin Fryberger’s basket with two seconds remaining propelled the Conestoga Boys Varsity Basketball Team to a thrilling 45-43 victory over Penn Wood at the Marple Newtown tip-off tournament.

Conestoga starters Fryberger, Rowan Miller, Brendan Styer, Ben Robinson and Sean Mackey battled with Penn Wood from the opening tip.

Miller had a stand-out performance with 15 points and 5 assists.  Fryberger finished with 9 points and 5 rebounds.  Conestoga also got strong play from its bench as Liam Smith, Cory Hogan and Shane O’Brien contributed clutch rebounds and smart defense.

After the game, Head Coach Sean Forcine shared his perspective: “First game of the season, obviously we’re happy; a win is a win! There’s definitely some things we can learn, but I’m proud of the boys.

“We challenged them on the boards, and we came up with some huge rebounds at the end.  We challenged them at half time to take some charges.  We took a few big charges in the second half that I think helped the momentum.

“Most importantly, I’m proud that they kept their cool when Penn Wood went on a run.  No one panicked.  We stuck with the game plan and if you can do those three things – rebound, defend, and keep your cool — generally things tend to work out especially on a night you don’t shoot well.”

Stoga Falls Short With 52-44 Loss to Marina

December 2, 2023

The Conestoga High School boys basketball team fell short Saturday, dropping a 52-44 decision to a tough Marina (CA) team at the Tip-Off tournament. Despite the loss, Pioneers head coach Sean Forcine remains optimistic.

“I give Marina credit. They executed well.  They hit a big 3 with a minute and change left that gave them a 5-point boost. We lost our poise a little bit on offense and tried to deviate too much from our system. We are young so those things are going to happen.

“The goal is to keep working hard at practice and grow from this and we get better next time we step on the floor.”

Rowan Miller had 10 points 5 assists for the Pioneers while Sean Mackey scored 7 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.  Sam Gibbs came off the bench to splash a trio of three-point shots to finish with 9 points.

The Pioneers will return to action Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. with a game at Haverford.
