Varsity uses strong defensive effort in 48-31 win over Ridley

In a rescheduled Saturday afternoon home game due to Friday’s snowfall, the Pioneer Pit was surprisingly full and Stoga fed off their energy to overtake Central League rival Ridley 48-31.  With both teams playing aggressive defense, scoring was hard to come by in the first period as Stoga led only 8 to 5. However, Ridley quickly found themselves in foul difficulty giving Stoga free chances at the line. Transition baskets by Evan and Charlie along with a crazy Zach sliding shot at the buzzer helped stretch the lead to 22-13 at the half.
Both teams continued their intense play with Zach taking a hard foul on a drive to the basket. A resulting technical on Ridley allowed Zach to convert 4 foul shots and maintain possession leading to a 35-21 lead after three. Ridley mounted a bit of a comeback in the 4th quarter, but some timely transition baskets from Charlie and Milt helped put the game out of reach. Leading scorers were Zach (11), Shane (10), Charlie (9) and Milt (7). Mike pulled down a team leading 7 boards while going a perfect 4-4 from the foul line. Next up, Lower Merion at home Tuesday night at 7 pm. Hoping for a big student turnout for this huge early season matchup!
