Varsity loses home opener to St. Elizabeth's (DE) 64-56

Energized by a loud and crowded “Pioneer Pit” Stoga came out strong in the opening quarter fueled by the excellent play of Junior PG Zach Lezanic and Senior Charlie Shappell and found themselves up 22-18. The second quarter was a back and forth affair as both teams played aggressive defense forcing turnovers and blocking shots underneath. Despite some strong offense from Shane Scott off the bench the first half ended tied 33-33.
The third quarter saw both teams trading baskets with St. Elizabeth’s taking a narrow lead 47-45. In the fourth quarter, St. Elizabeth slowed the pace and spread out their half court offense. Running time off the clock, the Vikings were able drive and dish to open teammates for some crucial baskets. Stoga’s offense began to stall and they were forced to foul. St. Elizabeth converted enough from from the free throw line to pull ahead for the win 64-56, while Stoga struggled from the charity stripe making only 12 of 20 attempts.
Zach Lezanic led the way for Stoga with 25 pts, 3 asst., and 2 steals, while Shane Scott posted 12 pts. and Charlie Shappell 8. Mike Erickson was tough on the boards with 4 pts. and 9 rebounds for the game. The Pioneers have to shake off the loss quickly as they are back in action at home Saturday afternoon @2:30 against Glasgow HS (DE).
