The Conestoga Boys Varsity Basketball Team traveled to Unionville, PA high school today for the annual Unionville Tournament and defeated visiting Holy Ghost Prep 59-32. It was a defensive and offensive showcase put on by the Pioneers.
Conestoga starters Patrick Corr, Brendan Styer, Ben Robinson, Abe Dembele, and Liam Smith jumped on Holy Ghost early from the opening tip, with Styer hitting an immediate three pointer…and Conestoga never looked back. Dembele owned the boards with strong rebounds and driving for layups to increase the Pioneer lead. Smith was a power under the glass, taking six charges in the game.
Conestoga also saw strong play from its bench, with Brian Schubert, Connor Demming, and Westin Freyberger picking up the momentum from the perimeter, hitting crucial three pointers to increase the Pioneer’s lead. Peter Costigan entered the game and provided physical muscle, diving for loose balls and continuing Stoga’s momentum.
Head Coach Sean Forcine earned his first win as the Pioneers’ new varsity head coach. After the game, he shared his perspective:
“What I’m most proud of is these boys played as hard as they possibly could. Our defense was awesome. We took five charges in the first half. We’ve been preaching attitude and hard work and the amount of energy and enthusiasm our team came out with was the difference. We also shot over 50 percent from the three-point perimeter. If we can continue to play like we played today, it’s going to be an exciting season.”
Conestoga takes on Freire Charter School in its next contest in the Unionville Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 3:15 PM.
